from Chapter One:
He was dreaming of her again. It was the early hours of August 31th, twenty-five years ago. On a Greyhound bus, a young man was sleeping in the third row. His name was Miller Hoffman and he was dreaming of the young woman he met and fell in love with two years before.

“So, Miller,” [i]Bobbie said, looking over at him and smiling at him. “Why go back to Arkansas?”
“I never wanted to leave,” Miller said, shaking his head and sighing. “I told you that the only reason why I left was because of my father, remember?”
“Yeah, I remember now,” Bobbie said. She reached out and took Miller’s hand. “But do you remember how unhappy you were?”
Miller frowned. She was right. He was unhappy, with no friends. He then smiled. The bullies at his elementary school learned fast not to pick on him. He always fought back, no matter how big the other kid was. “I have a few happy memories of Arkansas.”
“And is that why you’re going back?” Bobbie shook her head. “You can’t go back to the past and you know that.”
“Yeah,” Miller said, frowning, frustrated because she was right. Or rather, since this was only a dream, he knew he had his doubts about going back to Arkansas. “Why can’t I let you go?”
Bobbie smiled. “You don’t want to, Miller.”
Miller sighed. He had other girlfriends besides Bobbie. There was Mandy, his first girlfriend. And there was also Tina, his girlfriend after Bobbie.
